I'm Lynne Chapman: born in London but now living in Sheffield in the north of England. I’ve been a freelance illustrator for 20 years, working mostly in pastels, and specialising in children’s books.

My children's illustrations are drawn from my imagination (you can see them at http://www.lynnechapman.co.uk) but I fill my sketchbooks with places and people I observe directly, usually on my travels, or sitting on a train. I like to keep the sketching and illustration very separate, so my sketchbooks remain ‘fun’ and don’t get sucked into ‘work’.

It's great to have a chance to share my sketches and to see other peoples. It would be even better if Sketchcrawl helped me to meet up with any other sketchers out there, who are based in my area... I'm used to solitary sketching, so it would be fun to try going out and about with others.


I mostly draw at A6 or A5, and use a 3B pencil. I don’t have a stool, so often draw standing: I like the restriction of having to finish before my arms drop off, plus travelling so light means I can be ready to draw on a whim, pretty much anywhere, anytime. Thank you for the introduction Lynne Chapman, a pleasure to have you here.

I believe there are a few people from England, who may live close enough to you (maybe). The best approach is to create a location where you would like to sketch, and see if others engage you, or perhaps you could see if someone else in England has already posted and engage them there (unless the area is too far, but I have seen people travel long distances just to be with a larger group).

Hi Lynne. I guess Gateshead is hardly your "neck of the woods", but it's closer than a lot of other people here.

Hi Lynne, I've just joined and am living in Leeds but I'd definitely be interested in a day of sketching in Sheffield !
