John, LA Live sounds like a great new place to sketch - I've never been there!
I think winters are lovely in the San Gabriel Valley area when you can see snow-capped mountains....

Other past suggestions - some cost money:

Long Beach: Aquarium of the Pacific ($ for admission), Queen Mary ($ for admission), The Pike, Pine Street, etc.
Redondo Beach
Getty Center ($ for parking)
Hollywood Blvd.: Hollywood & Highland, Grauman's Chinese Theatre, The Egyptian Theater, Musso's etc.
Koreatown
San Pedro: 6th street, LA harbor, Palos Verdes parks / Korean Bell
Los Angeles Zoo ($ for admission)
Universal CityWalk ($ for parking)

We've been to Farmer's Market/The Grove, Old Town Pasadena, Santa Monica, Venice, Union Station/Olvera Street, Grand Central Market/Bradbury Building, and am up for visiting there again.

Adamson House sounds like a find! Looks like there are buildings + gardens to draw there.
I liked Gamble House when I took a tour there, not sure if they let you roam around inside the house to sketch after the tour, though....

How about Santa Monica pier?? ..............

Hi, I'm from Santa Barbara, but am planning to come down for the sketch crawl, possibly with a couple other people.

I've been to the Santa Monica pier quite a few times before, but I'm open to pretty much anywhere.

I'm not making a vote--I'm just writing out thoughts of places I visited...

I visited Greystone Mansion, and I was impressed. You can't go in but from the outside is the beautiful old school mansion, classy gardens. A nice view of LA. There's not much people if you want to draw people, but pretty cool if you like architecture/gardens.

Redondo Beach Pier is pretty cool. If you like sketching fishermen, the beach, tons of overly friendly pelicans, and retail stores on the docks, this place is pretty neat. Lots of people to draw.

I recently visited Korean Friendship Bell again. Really nice view of the ocean as well as the old school Korean architectural structure. Ocean breeze can make it quite windy--bring a jacket.

Anybody been to the LA Zoo? I haven't been there in a long time.... Drawing animals sound like a good change of pace...

I do enjoy Santa Monica pier... if it's crowded, parking can be a little rough.

Any more cool places?

Hey guys, just throwing in a quick 2 cents. I'm taking classes at CDA in Pasadena, and I'll be in class 2-5 during this sketchcrawl. I could probably join up before 2 though as long as the pick isn't too far away.

My thoughts on locations:
* LA Zoo - I have a couples pass so i can get one extra person in free if that is decided | 10am-5pm adult $13 Free parking http://www.lazoo.org/visit/
* The Arboretum - Looks cool, since it's a Saturday I would assume there would be people, and there are buildings so it could cover a broad spectrum of things to sketch. | 9am-4pm adult $8 Map: http://www.arboretum.org/images/uploads/visitor_map.jpg

Out of the choices so far I'm kind of leaning towards the Zoo.
I liked A LOT of the other suggestions but some of them seemed a bit complicated and parking could be problematic.
The Griffith Observatory is amazing, I don't know if that interests anyone. There are normally lots of people. | 10am-10pm Free - Interior Floor Plan http://www.griffithobservatory.org/vmap.html

The LA zoo sounds good to me.

Well if everyone is cool with the LA Zoo what time do you want to meet up?
It opens at 10 and closes at 5
And I'm sure if people want to continue sketching even later you could go get some food or drinks somewhere to share sketches and chill. Would anyone be interested in that? I'm just curious because my class ends at the same time the zoo closes so I either go home or call people to hunt you guys down.

I have four passes for the LA Zoo. I can share with anyone at the gate within, say, ten minutes of the arranged time (10:00, if that's what we settle on).

If it works out for most people, I'm fine with LA Zoo. I am on a limited budget until I find a stable gig, so, yes, I'd love to get one of the LA Zoo passes!!!

After 5pm, I'm planning to go to the Getty (free parking/admission after 5pm on Saturday night ) to see some exhibits and sketch/chill - any of you are free to join me -

- and if I have energy for more cross-town driving, I may check out the Gallery Nucleus opening for Alice in the Wonderland show:

Hey Folks... Im new to this Sketchcrawl thingie but here are a couple of ideas if you/we/us are heading to the LA Zoo you might like to take a look at this site i put together a few years ago (Im not pimping anything) its filled with animal drawing information. I just checked it out and a lot of the information and images are still accessable... http://animaldrawing.livejournal.com/ . Ive been going there for years and its a nice walk around. You get tired of drawing the 4 legged creatures there are always the more entertaining two legged ones available.

Another nice place is the Huntungton Gardens in San Marino, right next to Pasadena http://www.huntington.org/huntingtonlib ... mid=210ena very beautiful lush gardens with a wide varity of desert, Japanese, Chinese and classical European layouts. Cafeteria there as well and lots of space and quiet places to move around.

There is also Chinatown, Los Angeles http://www.chinatownla.com/ and Olvera Street http://www.olvera-street.com/html/olvera_street.html as well but whatever everyone comes up with will be fine. My vote is that LA ZOO is good start for me and has a wide range of things to scribble about.
Hows the voting work? Is a mass email sent out or we just drop back in here Friday the 26th? So many questions!

By popular demand, we're going to the Zoo! It's a good place to practice your animal + people drawing skills. The zoo closes at 5pm, so you can stay for a bit or hang out all day.
