New York, NY, USA [RESULTS]

Post by sunilo »

5 of us braved the snow banks to meet up at the Winter Garden in the World Financial Center. We were lucky to witness the Pathmark Gospel Choir competetion...there was lots of action to draw. It was great meeting new people, I hope you'll post some of the wonderful drawings I saw in your books.

I was a bit stiff at the Winter Garden, but made some fun observations of the different performers.

After a snack and some coffee, I wandered over to St. Paul's Chapel. The Chapel is located directly across from the World Trade Center site. For months after the attacks it was a open to the rescue workers so they could eat, rest and recover during their relief efforts. Inside is an exhibit documenting these efforts. Hence the banner in my drawing:

Below is a shivery attempt to draw outside, the writing is something a passerby screamed to some tourists.

I attended an indie rock benefit concert at the Living Room in the evening. Rockers can be pretty difficult to capture, but I thought this drawing had some charm to it.

it was great meeting everyone yesterday (audrey, paul, yung, and sunil). thank you for sharing your sketchbooks with me -- you're a talented lot.

here are some of my sketches from the winter garden.

a stage was set up for the pathmark gospel choir competition, which began earlier than 10 a.m. below is the stage, the sound guy, and i think a security guard (not sure, but he stood still the longest):

the competing gospel choirs had uniforms of distinctive colors. the harlem choir group (girls wore yellow scarves, boys wore yellow ties) won the $10K prize.

some people at the event:

and finally, the stage emptied for an hour-long lunch break before it started again.

after a snack break, i went home and took a nap. when i woke up, i found i wanted to sketch some more, so i hopped on over to the met.

hope to see you all again at the next sketchcrawl!

Only in NYC can you find such a great variety of different things to sketch! Excellent sketches!

thanks, sunil. it was great meeting you, too.

thanks, michelle. sometimes the variety of things to sketch is overwhelming, but it also gives little excuse not to pick up a pen/pencil/brush. (even when all i want to do is be lazy. )

Great sketch of St. Peters Church, Sunil.
Love that watercolor from the Met, mabeloos.
That must have been lovely to happen upon the gospel performances! Sounds like you had a fun day. :)

Also...here's the link to Central Park sketching group we were talking about. I think I'll try to attend the Natural History Museum meetup in a few weeks.

Wow, these sketches are amazing! Lots of styles and subjects! I crawled in New Haven this time but I'm sure I'll do another one in NYC in the future.
