Brisbane/Gold Coast (Australia)

Post by Shello »

Hi everyone,

I'm going to start this location topic so that anybody in my area wanting to do the 31st International Sketchcrawl has a starting point for all of us in this area to work out a crawl that would suit all! Last time I drew by myself and was a draw-bot so it would be fantastic to get a group of interested folk drawing on that day!
April 16th! I'm looking forward to it. I'm happy to draw in Brisbane or the Gold Coast....here are a couple of my location suggestions that might suit a group.....Alma Park Zoo,
Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Valley to CBD Mall, City Botanic Gardens....Paddington to Westend or vice versa! Southbank to Westend! Looking forward to your replies and excellent ideas!

Hi Shello

The word is being spread. There is some interest in sketching in the South Bank precinct to capture how the area is recovering after the Brisbane floods. The idea was put forward by a community TV station documentary producer. They would like to follow some sketch crawlers around on the 16th.

Thanks for starting this thread.

Sounds great! So people should start signing up and joining Sketchcrawl, then discuss and arrange where and when we all meet upon this forum! Is there any preferences and how early?

Hey definitely keen to get involved as I'm sure lots of others would be, do we just rock up on the day or do participants need to formally register prior and be vocal on this forum? Also in case you're looking for input for thoughts on location I'm up for anywhere pretty much in and around central Brisbane so outer burbs or gold coast will be a deal killer for me. Well, looking forward to participating in something I've never done with a bunch of you fellow sketch happy strangers :)

Awesome! Hi Canuckinluck! Yes, you sign up to Sketchcrawl before the event, but that's mainly so that you can participate after the big day and post your work up on the forum and then go and checkout the lovely work that people all over the world have drawn on that same day. (Yes there are some time differences!) You don't have to comment, but that's part of the fun of course...the sharing.....We could all do that too at the end of the Brissie Sketchcrawl, share our work. COFFEE!
And yes, I think the central Brisbane area is going to be the best bet as it the most accessible. Dognam says Southbank is of interest and some people want to film the Sketchcrawl....does that suit you? We can all arrange the exact time and meeting point as the time draws nearer but I guess we can all think about an itinerary or even a circuit!
What about utilising the Goodwill bridge to QUT? Southbank meetup, sketch, morning coffee? towards the Goodwill Bridge, views from the Bridge......Qut, Botanic Gardens, lunch there? draw, onto the CBD and Brisbane Mall.....lots of people to draw......or maybe grab some lunch and go back past the Casino and back over the bridge to .....The Museum.....back along to Southbank.......sketchcrawling all the way........just throwing out some thoughts here... What do you guys think? It could work but we'd all need a map and set times to regather and enjoy lunch and coffee or we could just all picnic together OR would it be better for everybody to stay in the Southbank to Art Gallery vicinity? There are such great views from the bridges though!
Think about what would suit you all.....there is always plenty to draw from any of those places......good views of the buildings....etc
We could meet all meet at the Southbank Station end of Southbank Parklands. I'll go check out the logistics of it.....I haven't seen all the flood damage close up and accessibility etc.
We can make concrete plans closer to the date, exact times and spots etc so I'll keep checking back.....Tell me what you all think of the above ideas?
I put up info on Sketchcrawl on my blog and I included some videos of the event too http://michelleb-animator.blogspot.com/ ... up-on.html, which will be of interest to the people wanting to video the event.

Hi Guys, things are rolling, the words out and I'm hoping we can all get behind the 31st Sketchcrawl as a fundraiser for Japan. Here's the updated details on my bloghttp://michelleb-animator.blogspot.com/ ... aiser.html in regards to how we can go about this as a Brisbane group of intrepid Sketchcrawlers. I'll update soon.

Hi JJ! Great to meet you! Hi everyone!
Brisbane Itinerary for 31st Sketchcrawl:

So Southbank it is! We'll meet at 11 am officially on Saturday 16th of April at the Suncorp Piazza : map here http://www.southbankcorporation.com.au/corporate-area. Of course everyone can come earlier or stay later but this time allows for out-of-towners or folk with other commitments to get more opportunities to draw. Thanks Frank for the input on these times and places.

Basically we'll meet up at the Suncorp Piazza then be let loose with our sketchbooks and pencils.....on the whole Southbank area.....and that includes the other side of Melbourne Street too! The walkway...the Museum, Qld Art Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art areas too.....lunch can be brought with you or bought at any of the cafes....so no set time for this.

At 3pm, we will all meet up for a coffee and an open-air-art gallery sharing of our sketches at the River Cafe http://qag.qld.gov.au/about_us/visiting ... llery_cafe, which is riverside of GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art):
http://qag.qld.gov.au/about_us/visiting_the_gallery.

Please note: this Sketchcrawl is still most definitely a fundraiser for Japan. But what Enrico Casarosa has proposed is that you download the sheet here: viewtopic.php?f=56&t=6355 that he has created for us to fill in. However please note that the donors pledge the money (and you make a note of it on the sheet) but then the donors give their money directly to their charity of choice. (put the charity name in the Non Profit Column of the sheet)

This is a great idea and much more doable and allows the donors to choose.

As we are outside the US , we cannot have our donations sent to the Give2Asia Fund. However on the Artists Help Japan website it is recommended that donors outside the US give to these related charities: http://artistshelpjapan.blogspot.com/p/faq.html . However as I said, individual donors may have a favoured charity that they can donate to such as the Red Cross or Save the Children that they prefer to donate to. There may also be a direct donation URL for Sketchcrawl fundraisers in the future. Keep an eye out for it!

Details of this and the fundraising sheet to download are at this Sketchcrawl forum post by Enrico Casarosa here: viewtopic.php?f=56&t=6355 and http://www.sketchcrawl.com/

So it should be a great day and Southbank, although still a bit bruised and bandaged should make for some interesting drawings! If it's rainy there are also plenty of undercover places. And there are plenty of places high and lo to go people, building, river, skyline, and foilage, animal, vehicle watching! If anybody wants to get inspired before the day, they can also have a travel through the wonderful drawings from all over the world from past Sketchcrawls in the Sketchcrawl forums. index.php

I also caught a LLoyd Rees exhibition recently containing plenty of Sketchbook drawings he did of Brisbane circa 1912, still fresh! It's free and on until June!Here:http://qag.qld.gov.au/exhibitions/curre ... _and_light

I'll post any-more updates here if they happen, so keep an eye out as we are close to the date!

Excellent work Shello

I hope to join the Sketch Crawl somewhere along the Southbank, Brisbane trek. Most likely at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) at the west end of the City reach of the Brisbane River.

There's a really interesting mechanical structure on a pontoon moored between the State Library and GoMA - so many interesting shapes and textures.

The timings are good as they still allow Saturday morning workers an opportunity to join in and meet up.

Yay! Hi Janine and friend and Dognam!Hi Everybody!

I'm looking forward to Saturday and meeting up with all of you fellow Sketchcrawlers too! It's going to be great! Thanks Dognam, and that sounds like a great drawing in the making!

I just want to update about the fundraising side and clarify that we can, as Sketchcrawlers outside of US , donate directly to the Give2Asia specially set up URL. Go to Enrico Casarosa's post and link on this website http://www.sketchcrawl.com/2011/04/give ... etchcrawl/ . It's just not tax deductible that's all. I had to clarify that for myself too. So I will personally now be donating that way.

Thankyou to everybody for responding and being involved and becoming part of your Brisbane Sketchcrawl group!I'm looking forward to drawing alongside members who have Sketchcrawled in Brisbane before and thankyou to those members who have spoken on this forum and those that have signed up to Sketchcrawl but  haven't as yet needed to post on the forum. Looking forward to drawing with you all on Saturday!

Hi! Janine and JJ,
I was drawing outside the Suncorp Piazza right near the front entrance from 10.30 am onwards as was the arranged meeting place on this forum! At 11am no-one had showed up at this arranged meeting place so I continued to draw, giving everybody a chance to find me and meet-up, I decided to stay there, visibly drawing, so anyone turning up would see a fellow Sketchcrawler! At 12.30 a friend from college showed up and we stayed there until nearly 1.00pm until another college friend showed up! We made the most of all the people going past and we drew! I'm sorry you missed us and can understand your frustration BUT we did spend a long time waiting for you both as you sounded like you would turn up so that's why I stayed put, actually concerned that you might miss us! :!: :) The directions were that we would meet at the Suncorp Piazza at 11am and I think that I made that clear in the forum post. I needed to make a firm descision about where to meetup, and gave everybody interested the opportunity to discuss or change this!
I'm sorry that you feel disgruntled but you can imagine that I was very concerned that you might miss us and we waited at the same spot a very very long time. After 1.30 pm we decided that nobody else was going to show up there at the Suncorp Piazza and as we'd drawn a lot there, we went and got a coffee at a cafe close by and stayed there and drew, planning to go down to the boat races and keeping an eye out for you fellow Sketchcrawlers! We drew there for a good hour then at 2.30 realised we'd better forget the boats and go to the designated 3pm meeting place to meet another Sketchcrawler who could not get there until that time. We had to walk around the back of a lot of large blocked off areas. From some of your drawings it looks like you were at the Maritime museum at some stage then the Pagoda? We certainly might have seen you if we had gone the riverside way. So that is really unfortunate.
I'm certain I could not have been any clearer about the meet-up place. It is unfortunate that we missed you both and I was looking forward to meeting two more fellow Sketchcrawlers!
It was quite a walk to the 3pm meeting place so it was 3.10 when we got there at the Riverside Cafe at GOMA and met the friend there and we looked there for other Sketchcrawlers and there was no-one else drawing except the person who we met there!
I'm a bit upset that you are both upset as I have tried very hard to organise this and make all the directions very clear. So where were you both at 11 am when I was drawing and waiting at the Piazza? :) I would have preffered that you had waited for us to post before any conclusions were made or results were posted! This Sketchcrawl is meant to be fun AND was a fundraiser for Japan, so I'm glad you had a good day and we are sorry that we missed you. Perhaps if everybody meets at the right time and right place as designated? Anyway you have put me in a bit of an awkward position because I have been trying to arrange this for months and your post implies that we were not there at the designated place when I certainly was.Without sounding too harsh or rude I would like you to understand that if you had met up with me at the designated time and place this unfortunate misunderstanding would not have happened. Please post and address this as we could fix this problem and we would value your input. To avoid such problems in future we need to all communicate sooner about where we would all like to meet up and at what times as I had given everybody ample opportunity and I really wanted to make things fair and clear and doable, so I hope you see my dilemma and that you can understand that we were a bit peeved that we waited for so long and that you didn't show! Perhaps we can all laugh about this missed meet-up next-time!
