Hi all Vancouver sketchers...

Sketchcrawl 34 - Saturday January 21, 2012.....
Lets get some ideas for a location and/or subject asap...
It will probably be cool and wet therefore we will need to sort out a location where we can be warm and cosy inside. :(
Somewhere with washrooms preferably and with comfortable seating.
Anyone got any ideas?

Note: Monday Jan 23rd is Chinese New Year. This might be something of a theme. We already did Chinatown in July 2011 but maybe we can work something colourful into the Sketchcrawl.
2012 will be year of the Dragon.. so there is something colourful. How about Chinese New Year card sketches as part of this, especially if we are indoors.

I opened up this thread now so we can get people organized. Anyone interested in helping me round up some sketchers.. the last Sketchcrawl was lonely for me, and I would prefer some company on Sketchcrawl 34.
Any suggestions on getting non-artists out to give them a taste of sketching? A venue also encouraging kids participation?
Don't be shy ... we don't bite

PS: On World Wide Sketchcrawl #34 day (Jan 21, 2012) ... I will open up another thread ... Vancouver, BC, Canada [RESULTS] where sketchers will be able to post their photos and sketches done that day. For now, please use this thread to introduce yourself and your intentions regarding sketching in Vancouver for Sketchcrawl #34.
Cheers

Hi Dave,

All the best of the season to you. I've been enjoying your blog. Would love to join you for the next crawl, but sadly will not be in town. Hopefully, we will be able to get together for another one later this year that happens when I am in the lower mainland.

Cheers,

Sheila

Suggested venue for Vancouver - World-wide Sketchcrawl 34:

Vancouver Marine Museum - 1905 Ogden Avenue in Vanier Park

Exhibit 1: The Craft and Culture of the Squamish Canoe Chatwilh
For countless generations, Squamish people hunted, fished, gathered resources, engaged in battle, and welcomed visitors from their canoes. Across the region that would become Vancouver, these were the vehicles that literally bound together life on the land and sea. This special exhibition will take visitors through the lifecycle of a Squamish canoe-from its roots in a stand of local temperate rainforest, through the hands of Squamish craftsmen, and throughout the Salish Sea. Squamish carvers are renowned for crafting seven types of specialized canoes. Discover how these watercraft continue to connect the Squamish people to each other and the wider world. Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm

Exhibit 2: A Century of Service - The Marine Police Unit [1911 - 2011]
From December 1, 2011 to February 19, 2012

Outside: Visit the Deep Submersible Vehicle "Ben Franklin" on display.

Anyone interested or have any other suggestions?

Cheers

Alle..
If you check with your classmates and get some ideas we can discuss what you think is best.
Get back to me on here with suggestions soon and we can arrange a place and time to meet.
It might be quite cold on Saturday so lets find somewhere where we can keep warm while drawing.

I want to try some new ways of sketching this week.. we'll see how it goes :-)
Cheers

Marine Museum looks like a fun place to draw, with all those model and gadgets. The other place I can think of is the Museum of Anthropology at UBC. There are a bunch of stuff to draw from. The last time I was there, the place was going through some renovation. Hopefully those were done, which would give us more room to move around. Yeah, looks like it is going to be a cold and wet one.(The way it is supposed to be. :D )

Hi

I am visiting Vancouver from Australia and I hope to have some free time to sketch on Saturday 21st (from work).
This will be my first time with SketchCrawl but looks like fun - even if it is cold and raining.

I don't have any preference of where to sketch so do you mind if I tag along?
Have you finalised the time and place?

asuka...

We would be glad to have you join us. We are just trying to decide where we will meet and what we will sketch.
Alle and some friends are to make some more suggestions then we can make the decision.
Welcome to Vancouver.
Check back here regularly for the next couple of days and we will get things sorted out.

Cheers

Vancouverites..

Option: MUSEUM OF ANTHROPOLOGY - UBC
I checked in with the Museum of Anthropology today and this is the reply:

"HI David and thanks for your message.
First, have you booked your visit with our Bookings Coordinator? We always like to know when groups are coming in, and, if you have 10 or more, you get a special rate if you book ahead of time. Pls contact Joanne Tait at bookings@moa.ubc.ca.

Second, you can draw in the galleries, but only using pencils or pencil crayons, and you would need to bring your own folding stools and clipboards.
We do not permit ink, pastels, watercolors, or oil, as these materials can stain the carpet and damage the objects if they happen to spill on them.

And yes, you are permitted to take photos of your group and the Museum and its collections for personal use, just not for commercial purposes.
Hope this is helpful,
Jennifer Webb
Communications Manager
ADMISSION (rates include 12% HST):

Adult $16.75
Student & Senior 65+ $14.50
Family (2 adults & max 4 children 18 and under) $44.75
Tuesday evenings 5-9 pm $9.00 per person (groups included)
MOA Members, UBC staff, students, & faculty Free
Children 6 and under Free

Option: MARINE MUSEUM

I will see if I can check with the Marine Museum as I have with MOA - UBC above. I'll let you know what I find out.

My personal preference is to find some place with benches (as I am not very mobile) and that allow at least watercolour pencils.

Cheers

Thanks for the info Dave. I guess they just did not notice me when I visited? I was painting in the museum, although I am a pretty tidy painter. :)
