Houston, Texas
The next international SketchCrawl is Saturday, January 19. I have this on my calendar in pen with a thick wall around it to keep out invading engagements. Here's hoping we have a nice crowd of enthusiastic sketchers. Any suggestions for places to meet and sketch?

Re: Houston, Texas
This will totally depend on weather, Jon. A balmy day of 75 will mean an outdoor crawl. A colder day will bring us indoors. Last year we did the Museum of Natural Science. I have always wanted to
pick a really lively indoor venue for the January crawl. Be thinking of likely places...even something interesting going on inside Reliant or GRB would work, but this might be the time to do the inside of the newly renovated Ideson library building, or the art museum or even the Galleria.

OK Houston crawlers...I just realized that this crawl is only two weekends away. YIKES! Time to be thinking about where we all want to crawl. I'm predicting it will need to be an indoor venue unless we have a freak spell of 70 degree weather. So last year was the Museum of Natural Science. Been there. Done that. There are lots of interesting places in Houston so lets come up with something great.
Post your ideas here and we'll agree on a place and time.

Re: Houston, Texas
Here are some ideas Diandra and I were emailing about:
George R Brown has two private shows going on that weekend, so that's out.
The newly renovated Julia Ideson Building...good for architecture, but sparse for people even on Saturdays. Lovely though...
The International Gem and Mineral Show is at Reliant...that would involve parking and admission, but we could park somewhere and carpool or take the train. There's also a gun show there, but I'm not up for that much.
Pasadena Convention Center has a stamp and scrap show going on. I've been to this before and it's small but fun.
The Galleria...Diandra was afraid it would be crowded, but I think no more so than a convention or a museum on Saturday. And there's an ice rink there and places to sit around it.
The county courthouse was just renovated inside and out. I haven't been inside and would LOVE to get a look at what they've done. The courts aren't free for us to roam most days, but I could
find out how open it all is on Saturday.
And the last idea is a bit wild, but Nina Johanssen, the correspondent from Stockholm, did some great sketches inside IKEA (of all places).
If you can think of other ideas, post them here.

Re: Houston, Texas
Would anyone like to meet at Cricket's Cremery & Cafe at 315 w19th Street in the Heights on Saturday Jan 19? There's plenty of inspiration along w19th street.

Re: Houston, Texas
I'm up for almost anything but that looks particularly interesting. Street level views on google maps looks very interesting and hopefully lively enough with people to make it cool. The forecast today for the 19th is for sunny skies, 0% chance of rain, and a high of 58 so not bad at all.ArtL8dY wrote:Would anyone like to meet at Cricket's Cremery & Cafe at 315 w19th Street in the Heights on Saturday Jan 19? Re: Houston, Texas
Actually, I like the idea of the Galleria for the people or Julia Ideson Building for the architecture. There seems to be more opportunities for people to be walking around. Interesting as it was, that street view for Cricket's didn't look like it had places to sit for sketching or painting. (I have bad knees, I need to sit if I can.) I'd hate to be sitting on a sidewalk and be in the way.
Also, although it will warm up, it will still be in the mid-40's Saturday morning. brr!
Regardless, let's settle on a place and time. I have illustrators asking for specifics.

Re: Houston, Texas
I will go with whatever the group decides. I like both those choices Diandra. I'm trying to draw more people in their environment. And you're right, there's no place from the other side of the street on 19th to get the perspective and sit. (in my sketch for the Urban Texas sketchers bloghttp://urbansketchers-texas.blogspot.co ... texas.html I sat in my car)My first choice would be the Galleria, just because it will force me to stretch. However, if everyone wants the Ideson, it will still be warm enough between 9 and 10 to get people outside, in the city hall plaza, on the street, etc.
Tomas will be joining us later, since he has a family commitment. Haven't heard from Judith. Hoping some other folks will show up as well.

Re: Houston, Texas
Not sure if I can make it yet. Please post here and Facebook the location and maybe a meetup place for late arrival. If you meet at 9 maybe a meet up at 11 so that we can find you if you are some where as large as Galleria. thanks. J

Re: Houston, Texas
I am really curious about the library, so let's meet there. We can maybe plan another SketchCrawl this summer, and head to the Galleria then, when being inside out of the heat will be really appealing. I like that with the library we can sketch inside AND outside. Do we want to say 9:00-9:30 ish at the library?
Re: Houston, Texas
I think that time is good. I have a prior early morning commitment. It will be 10-10:30 before I make it there. I will look for all of you round and about.

Re: Houston, Texas
Great! I'll let my group know. Honestly, it will probably be closer to 9:30 before I get there, but I'll be there!
See y'all tomorrow.
See y'all tomorrow.
Re: Houston, Texas
I'll Try to be there around 9:30, for a few Sketchs and say Hello everyone , but i'll have to leave at 11:00. See you tomorrow.
Re: Houston, Texas
I plan to be there too, prolly at least by 10:00. I think the library is a good choice, considering location, weather, places to sketch, etc.

Re: Houston, Texas
FYI, just looked up library info, and they don't open until 10 on Saturdays. So, we'll be sketching outside for at least part of the day.
