New Plymouth New Zealand [RESULTS] under the mountain
New Plymouth is halfway up the North Island on the left.
Today was 'Japan Action Day' at the Puke Ariki museum to raise funds for the Japan Red Cross. You could dress up in a yukata (a summer kimono), try some origami, calligraphy, a fun game called fukuwarai and see kami-shibai, which is “paper theatre”.
Three of us were there to help support. Naturally we headed to the calligraphy first. I tried drawing the outlines of one of my drawings with the fat brush and sumi (ink).
Soon the littlies in kimonos were happy to model for us, and we promised to send a copy to them. So it was a fun afternoon.
Last weekend we had been fund raising for the Christchurch NZ, Earthquake. (The news has just said they had another big aftershock as I type this). It was called 'Shake the Quake' with entertainment, auctions etc. As I sketched an organiser put a collection bucket at my feet attached to several black and red balloons (the rugby colours of Canterbury, the province that Christchurch is capital of). People donated as I sketched. There were rows of classic cars and one Chev owner was keen for me to draw his 1959 shiny red car with wings and teeth. He donated generously when I gave it to him. A country singer who was giving his time entertaining wanted his picture drawn - which I gave him, so it was an eventful occasion.
I only had the yellow car below left in my pad to show for it.

At the end of last year they held a variety of cultural activites to celebrate Japan Day, including martial arts and sushi tasting.

The news of the new Quake is very sobering,
Taranaki, and my thoughts and prayers go out
to all of you.
But I am glad that you had that very colorful
and festive Japan day, anyway. Even the car
seems in the spirit. The bitsies are a
great addition-- you must have had so much
fun sketching them.

Great results from your sketching.
I "had" to give away one of my sketches for a donation and felt awful, I can't imagine how you felt loosing a whole set of sketches. Hope you raised lots of money.

Thanks Annie for your thoughts. No one hurt, some rocks down, some liquefaction and some damaged pipes.
The kids were great and helping with the fundraising.
Thanks too travelingsuep. Good to think this sketching interest everyone has can help in some way, so well done with donating yours.
Dhannyavaad Somsesh for your kind comments. Both were excellent models.

Re: New Plymouth New Zealand [RESULTS] under the mountain
Here are my pictures from our afternoon sketching at the Japan Action Day at Puke Ariki. I too enjoyed the afternoon, it certainly was fun sketching all the young children there.
This sketch is of the Japanese women there who were running the table with the calligraphy, origami and the games.
This young lady posed for all of us and stayed beautifully still.
This young Mum and her baby were also helping out.
I also went to the Canterbury "Shake the Quake" fund raiser for the Christchurch earthquake.
Here is a picture of an old Buick (I don't know much more about it than that), that belongs to our local Mayor.
And here's the windwand, a local icon for good measure!
I hope you enjoy all our sketches! And I hope everyone's fund raising for Japan was successful.
Jackie.

Lola you are correct. Taranaki is known for having an over abundance of artisitic talent. It's even been debated whether there a genetic factor to it! The main thing I think though is that it's great living in an area that has so many artists, and many of them encourage and help each other. Plus we have a wide variety of material to draw.
Thank-you Lola and Travelingsuep for the comments

Impressive drawings! Especially the fish drawing, so vivid and lively. So sad about the quake.

Kamsa hamnida BH for your comments.
There is lots of good work being done in both countries to recover from the quakes.
