Detroit, MI USA [Results]

Post by kara »

I only just found this website today, so I didn't have time to try and meet up with anyone, and I feel a bit shy posting here. I've never tried sketching before and I've been looking at the other result threads and everyone's pictures are so interesting! I'd love to meet any other sketchers in Michigan - are you out there? Do you exist? :)

I didn't have time for much today, but I did draw this while looking out my friend's door (it was raining aaaall day).

Beautiful work, and your drawing even managed to evoke the raininess of the day!

Your story reminds me of the Atlanta sketchcrawl last February. A friend and I were excited about going, but when I went to pick her up at her house, we didn't get any farther than that. The crawl was canceled because of tornado watches and very heavy rain. We spent the morning in her house, thinking about maybe attempting the berries on the bush outside her porch screen, but didn't actually draw anything. Congratulations to you for doing something in spite of the weather!

Don't be shy about posting. That's one way to feel like your part of a larger community. For something that is all the time, not just 4 times a year, see the Urban Sketchers Flickr group. http://www.flickr.com/groups/urbansketches/ I just started participating in that.

And if you post proposing a Detroit crawl next time, don't be discouraged if nobody reponds or shows up. One time I proposed an Atlanta crawl and nobody came. But last April a bunch of people who had mostly not met each other happened to see the thread and decided to come. You never know what will happen.

If there is someone else sketching in Detroit, hopefully you'll find them. And if not, then your view of the world is that much more unique and interesting. Show Southeastern Michigan, one drawing at a time.

A very beautiful sketch! I started the same a year ago and on saturday on our first anniversary we were already 40 people sketching in Santiago de Compostela/Spain. There are sketchers everywhere. Good luck for the next sketchcrawl! =)

This is a beautiful page you sketched! Debora gave you some wonderful advice. Start your own sketch group... facebook/ craigslist/ meetups and come on flicker and the Urban Sketchers site. We are under rocks everywhere. My friend and I drove 50 miles to sketch with the NYC group!

Your sketch is nice and rich with colors. You did a very good start in sketchcrawling, next one will be in three months, I just hope you will find some others sketchers and meet to exchange and share with them, for me I'm too far.

Here is somebody to be inspired by: Detroit artist Sam Karres, who recently donated his sketchbooks to the University of MIchigan library. "With a sketchbook always in hand, he captured Greektown before the casino, at a time when it was truly a Greek neighborhood." http://www.lib.umich.edu/gallery/events/karres (reception/exhibit Oct. 24)

Beautiful sketch! And I've done many a solo crawl as well, so keep at it and hopefully you will inspire others in the area to take up their pens and paint as well!
