NYC WWSC 38 [RESULTS]
Quite a few people showed up for WWSC 38 in NYC. Not all made it to the end, but everyone got a chance to sketch. Sketches to follow.
At the Victory Theater steps in Times Square
At Grand Central, downstairs in the food court, warm and cozy.
Did anyone say trains?

It was a lot of fun to meet up with the NYC Urban Sketchers again. They are a great group!
I sketched on my train ride into the city this morning.

I met up with the group on 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue opposite the Port Authority Bus Terminal. We did one sketch outside before we went inside to get warm. Here is the view.

Our next stop was Grand Central Station. We sat in the food court to sketch. I did a view through one of the arches and some of the people at the tables.

About 5 o'clock I left the group and headed back to Penn Station to catch my train home. I had a little time to sketch the Long Island Railroad waiting area before my train was leaving.

Joan, I had looked here a while ago, and saw the photos, so I knew that you were at the sketchcrawl. Wow! you got a lot of sketching done. Some terrific sketches, especially the people.

Thanks everyone! Sketching with the group has forced me to sketch faster than usual so I can keep up as we move from one location to another. It is fun to sketch in a group. Hopefully everyone else will post their sketches soon.

I really loved the vibrancy in your people at the train station. . .how do you do it so quickly? Also the color of your paper adds a certain interest. . .I'm inspired!! Look forward to seeing more later. thanks

Port Authority-waiting for the group to gather
Port Authority inside-a varied collection of travelers and characters
Times Square from the steps of the Victory Theater
The Big Button Information Kiosk
Grand Central-warmth and food
Re: NYC WWSC 38 [RESULTS]
WOW! Joan, wish I could have joined you. Can't believe how many sketches you did, considering all the walking, and a lunch break besides! They all look so good, but I think my favorite is the people waiting at the Port Authority. You are a brave person for hanging out there.
And Richard! Another WOW! You know my favorite is the button! The Times Square sketches show the speed, vibrancy, and energy of the city.
Looks like there were some new faces. Wish I could have made it. Maybe next time

Re: NYC WWSC 38 [RESULTS]
This was my only painting of the day, a frantic half hour of ducking customers so as to not interfere with business. After I left the group at about 2:30, I returned to this grocery to score lunch - some excellent spinach pie - and to stock up on provisions.
Fellow sketcher Jason
This fellow approached Jason and me as we sat in Times Square, complimented our work, and then began proselytizing. We humored him with insightful questioning and let him go at it while we sketched him! A fair exchange.

I wasn't able to meet up with the NYC group in the morning but ended up doing a daylong dual-state sketchcrawl.
38th Worldwide Sketchcrawl by sumacm, on Flickr
I started off with a quick sketch over breakfast at Le Pain Quotidien in Stamford, Connecticut, before going to a few local garage sales.
Breakfast at Le Pain Quotidien, Stamford, CT by sumacm, on Flickr
At one of them I scored a set of unused watercolor pencils, among other art supplies, so I brought them along with me to my next stop -- Brooklyn, New York, where I met my friend Alison. We had lunch and sketched each other (here's Alison's sketch of me):
Then I sketched the expansive view from her window, with the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in the distance:

We went up a few flights of stairs to the roof, where we enjoyed breathtaking views of the sunset over Brooklyn and Manhattan. I quickly sketched two views before my fingers began to freeze (watercolor added later, of course!):

Here's Alison's sketch of the sunset:
When we went back down to warm up, I drew her daughter practicing piano (finally broke out those watercolor pencils):

Around 6:15 I headed back to Connecticut so I could catch The Sig Brothers playing at Coalhouse Pizza in Stamford -- got a prime seat right in front of the band so I could draw them as we enjoyed the music:
